Welcome
to our Presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Awards to Sam
Ulano and Jim
Chapin, two of the most innovative and talented drummers,
authors and educators in the history of drumming. This
award which was specially instituted by the Sabian
Cymbal Company to honor these two icons of the percussion
world, was presented by Russ Moy and Joe Caroselli on
Sunday June 13th, 1999 at the Grand Centurion Caterers in Clark,
New Jersey and was attended by over 400 drummers. Other
clinicians demonstrating their skills at the event included
Russ's former students: Todd
Walker,
Pat
O'Donnell and his band, Craig Scoppa, Stewart Karmatz and
"One
Cool Guy Band", Kevin Permison, and David Freeman and
fellow students from Rutgers University in a Traditional African
Drumming Ensemble. Also in attendance was our good friend,
legendary comedian and drummer Charlie Callas.

Sam
and Jim were the pioneers in setting the standards for drum
teachers, and have influenced countless drummers world wide.
For over 60 years, and at 80 years of age, each has the same
boundless energy, dedication and wit that they had when I first
met them 40 years ago!

It
was the late Gene Krupa "The Dean of All Drummers"
who told my Dad when I was 15 years old; "Have him study
with Sam Ulano, the best cat to study with in New York."
My relationship has lasted all these years and Sam has been
my mentor, teacher and "Drumcologist", he is my dear
friend who has mastered the art of total happiness in life.

Jim
Chapin taught me that the quest for technical facility can only
be realized when one is at peace with their abilities.
Confidence and "Chops" are a never ending journey,
as one evolves during a life-long endeavor. Jim is the
personification of total commitment, on a path that has no end
in this lifetime.
